Architectural works in Oxford, Devon, Glasgow, Hertfordshire, Oxfordshire, Brasil, etc., including restoration works to mediaeval churches, colleges, and timber-framed buildings.
Section Head, Greater London Council Department of Architecture and Civic Design, Historic Buildings Division, 1970-73. Architectural Editor of Survey of London. Supervised staff, and organised reparation of drawings, photographs, and texts for 37 of the Survey dealing with Northern Kensington. Also supervised production of material for Volumes 38 and 41. Recorded many hundreds of historic buildings within Greater London.
Consultant Architect and Architectural Adviser to the Scottish Secretariat for European Architectural Heritage Year, 1975 from 1973-75, working with the Scottish Civic Trust in Glasgow. Travel throughout Scotland, identification of towns and villages for enhancement, negotiations with local authorities, amenity societies, private individuals, and liaison with Government and other agencies. Preparation of design schemes for enhancement, including Town Schemes, the undergrounding of overhead lines, and conservation work on historic buildings. Negotiations with statutory undertakers, local authorities, and many other bodies. Professional advice given on restoration and other matters, including repair to fabric, colour schemes, restoration of ironwork, stone-cleaning and the designation of Conservation Areas. Advised Scottish Committee and represented Scotland at the London and Continental meetings of EAHY
Senior Architect/Planner, Hertfordshire County Council Planning Department, 1975-78. Design related to Conservation Areas and Historic Buildings, advice to District Councils, the public, and professionals. Responsible for regular liaison with local authorities, negotiations with applicants, preparation of evidence for public enquiries, preparation of designs, drawing up of briefs, writing reports, research and writing up of historical and architectural descriptions, advice on designation of Conservation Areas, advice to authorities and applicants, inspection of applications for consent, chairing of weekly working-parties and preparation of weekly reports to District Councils, attendance at regular County Panel meetings to give professional guidance, preparation of publications, supervision of staff, public relations, general diplomacy, chairing meetings, dealing with committees, and advising the County Planning Officer
Prepared competition design for a churchyard in 1985
As a freelance architect responsible for designs including a wine-merchants’ store, various dwellings, sundry small works, historic building work at Adderbury Oxon, Normanton-on-Soar Leics., Renfrewshire, and Headington. Advice given on a wide variety of architectural and town-planning matters. Restoration of Listed Building in Winchester, and restoration of major building in Glasgow, both in Conservation Areas, and both with grants. Expert advice and evidence given at public inquiries and appeals concerning Historic Buildings, hypermarkets, road schemes, village expansion, new buildings, and landscapes, as private consultant
Secondment to David Gibson Associates, Architects, of Loughborough, 1987. Historic buildings, design of quality housing, feasibility studies of leisure buildings, central area studies, reports, surveys, and inspections. In September 1987 at end of secondment appointed Consultant Architect to David Gibson Associates
Designed several funerary monuments, including work for Islip (Oxfordshire) and Burnham Overy (Norfolk). Supervised carving by craftsmen, and oversaw their completion and erection on site
